Song of the Knot

With our debut title Song of the Knot, we aim to push the boundaries of immersive storytelling in games. We'd like to play a game where every choice, big or small, is reflected in the game world and its characters. Where NPCs react — and act — believably, but not always predictably.

Free of the busywork of inventory juggling, rote combat and overly complex or numerous game systems, we'd like to lean back and be transported to another world. To build relationships, be it with fellow players in co-op, or companion characters with their own agendas and inner lives.

As avid gamers ourselves, over the years we’ve tried everything from tiny indie games to huge AAA best-sellers and haven’t found an experience that delivers what we’re looking for. Winding Ways Games was founded to bring our vision to reality, and we hope you’ll join us on our quest!

An expansive and original story

Lush and teeming with life of all kinds, on the surface, Verda seems like a paradise. The scattered human societies — some open and bustling, some reclusive — are thriving and largely at peace. Homes, villages and entire cities are grown using advanced biotechnology, whose origin and true purpose has been lost to time.

Discover an epic adventure where your choices will reshape both the world and its people forever. Cross paths with the Children of Aiko, face conscription by Moirai's armed forces, and discover the rich cultural tapestry of the Risen Isles.

Whichever path you choose, it will change you.

Meet the Team

Winding Ways Games was founded in 2022 by Johan Øverbye and Paul Skidmore based on a shared passion for immersive stories and craftsmanship. Hailing from Norway and the UK, together we bring over 50 years of experience across games, mobile AR and AI, and deep tech R&D.

Johan, currently a senior R&D architect at reMarkable, invented the world's fastest real-time mobile tracking and segmentation technology powering the String AR SDK. Used by Nike, Disney, Magic Leap and many more worldwide, this was 6 years before the release of ARKit and ARCore from Apple and Google.

Inspired by studios like BG2-era BioWare, Team Ico, Amanita Design, and Larian, when not working on our game, Johan is currently playing Into the Breach and Baldur's Gate 3, the latter as a Tiefling barbarian with anger management issues!

An experienced entrepreneur, Paul worked with Johan at String and later Decofy launching award-winning mobile AR and AI visualisation solutions used by millions around the world. With a background in emerging tech including generative AI and spatial computing, Paul loves to explore the boundaries of the possible.

Inspired by the work of Housemarque, Thatgamecompany and SuperGiant games, Paul is playing BG3 while waiting (im)patiently for Hades II early access next year.

Our debut title, Song of the Knot is in the pre-production phase and we're looking forward to sharing more details on our blog soon!

Behind the scenes

A tiny studio for now, we have big ambitions for our debut game Song of the Knot.

With unique and compelling game mechanics (which we'll talk more about soon), SotK runs on our custom game engine built in Rust and using Vulkan. Look out for an upcoming dev blog on this and more!

Song of the Knot will be released when it's ready, on both PC and Mac in all the usual places.
